ESPN recently published an article about NFL Players on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers using Cupping Therapy and Acupuncture to speed up recovery time.

The article centers around professional ball player, Akeem Spence, and his use of Cupping Therapy and Acupuncture to alleviate pain, soreness and tightness from training. He uses the therapy twice per week. Once on Monday to get him ready training and recover from the weekend games. And then again on Thursday to loosen him up from the practice and prepare him for the games.

The article goes on to explain some of the health benefits and physiological effects of cupping and even sheds light on the modern name for it, ‘myofascial decompression.’

The cupping therapy creates a vacuum by pulling the skin up and bringing fresh blood to the area. This helps speed up the healing process and gives additional range of motion. There is some superficial bruising from the treatments but it’s just aesthetic and pales in comparison to the pain relief you can get from the procedure.

Chinese Medicine Doctors have been using these treatments for thousands of years to treat everything from cough, to stomach problems, pain and more. The athletes are generally using it to heal from injuries on the field and recuperate at a quicker rate from practice and games.

In recent times, Football players and professional athletes like Olympians, superstar swimmer, Michael Phelps, Natalie Coughlin and even gold-medal gymnast Aly Raisman have all been turning to Traditional Chinese Medicine treatments like Acupuncture, Cupping, Tuina and Gua Sha / Scraping to help them perform better.
