With hurricane season literally at our door and a record number of 5 storms currently hovering in the Atlantic, it’s more important than ever to be prepared for anything, especially with this virus still lurking around.

Last thing you want to do is be rushing around for supplies and possibly put yourself and your family at risk, including the risks from increased stressors on the body. After all, high stress levels will dampen our innate immunity.

We’ve outlined the following five tips to help you prepare and deal with this overactive storm season.

1.)  Stock up early on the basics

Do not wait for the news to announce us being in the target zone. You now how the panic sets in once we know a storm is imminent. We all remember the recent toilet paper shortage… Don’t go nuts, but get the essentials like bottled water, empty containers of water to fill up, canned & dried foods, candles, lighters, batteries, cellphone battery banks, flash lights and first aid supplies.

2.) Stock up often

This way you don’t spend too much of your budget at once and you don’t feel like it’s a waste. When you go shopping weekly, just grab a couple small items each time.

3.) Keep your gas tank full

I remember last year driving past gas stations and seeing people sleeping in their cars and or leaving them parked in front of the tanks. Many gas stations were empty and the lines were outrageous. Avoid this completely by topping off the tank every few days.

4.)  Have a waterproof go bag in case of emergency

Worst case scenario, you might have to leave your home in a pinch, in the rain or possible flooding. Don’t freak out yet though. I’ve been living in Florida since 1986 and never needed one. Not even close. My father grew up here and never needed one either. But we’ve all seen the footage and devastating photos of those who were not so lucky. Look for a good quality dry bag. You can find them on amazon in all shapes and sizes. I have a variety and also used them as laundry bags when traveling. They are typically used for diving, boating and other water sports. If you know a storm is coming, pack one up with passports, cash, water, masks, medications, hand sanitizer, personal hygiene products, protein bars, MRE’s (Meals Ready to Eat), hard drives and whatever your most valuable possessions are. Think of things you need for basic survival and could be good for trading.

5.)  Breathe & Relax

Chances are we are all going to be fine. However, I was lucky enough to have my father teach me that, “It is better to have and not need, than need and not have”. Granted, he is a bit neurotic when it comes to prepping or even just leaving the house to go to the store. Thankfully that did not rub off on me. If you are feeling overwhelmed, stressed or anxious at any time, take just 30 seconds to one minute to reset. No matter how busy you are, you can spare 1 minute for your mental, emotional and physical health. And if you don’t, you will suffer a never ending cycle of self-torture. So find a quite corner and silence your phone, tv and radio. Close your eyes and take 10-20 deep breaths. Maybe 80-90% of your total inhalation and exhalation capacity. No need to force it. During the last exhalation, let out an audible “Ahhhhhhh” and visualize all the stress leaving your body through your mouth and melting out the bottom of your feet into the earth. Use this simple technique as many times or as long as you need to throughout the day, everyday. I typically recommend 1 minute upon waking up from sleep, 1 minute before or after lunch, and 1 minute before bed. Anyone can do that, no excuses. If you are having a tough day, do it more often. You can practice at your desk, in a closet, outside, on the toilet or at a red light (eyes open).

There is no need to live in fear or become a pro-doomsday prepper. And I promise you that if you follow these 5 basic guidelines, you will feel a lot less nervous about what may come, sleep better and feel better overall.

Stay safe and stay dry my friends!
