What Is Dry Needling?
Dry needling is a modern, minimally invasive treatment used by healthcare professionals to treat pain and movement issues. It involves inserting very thin, sterile, solid filament needles into the skin and muscle tissue to target trigger points — tight knots of muscle that can be a source of significant pain and dysfunction.
The goal of the procedure is to release this muscle tension and restore normal function. The needle's insertion can stimulate a twitch response, which is a reflex that helps break the pain cycle, relax the muscle, and improve blood flow to the area. This process encourages the body's natural healing response, leading to reduced pain and improved mobility.
What it treats
Muscular pain and dysfunction with an identifiable mechanical driver.
- Tight bands, knots and referred pain patterns
- Reduced range of motion and joint stiffness
- Overuse and repetitive-strain injuries
What to expect
- Full movement and posture assessment first
- Sessions typically 30–45 minutes
- Mild soreness for 24–48 hours is normal
- Most patients notice change within 1–3 visits
Dry Needling vs. Acupuncture
Both techniques use thin needles, but their underlying philosophies and goals are distinct. Dr. Fields' unique training in both integrative medicine and acupuncture allows him to blend these approaches when appropriate.
Acupuncture
Rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and aims to restore the flow of energy, or Qi, along specific pathways in the body called meridians.
Dry Needling
Based on modern neuroanatomy and musculoskeletal science. A direct, anatomical approach targeting specific points of muscular tension and dysfunction to release knots, decrease pain, and improve physical function.

Conditions Treated with Dry Needling
Dry needling can be a highly effective treatment for a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions. We often use it to help patients with:
Muscle Tension & Trigger Points
Releasing tight bands of muscle and painful "knots" that cause localized and referred pain.
Sports Injuries
From muscle strains and tendonitis to more complex injuries, promoting faster recovery and improved athletic performance.
Chronic Pain
Significant relief from persistent pain conditions, including back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, and headaches.
Joint Dysfunction
Addressing muscular imbalances that contribute to joint problems, improving mobility and reducing pain from osteoarthritis.
Post-Injury Mobility
Rebuilding range of motion after immobilization, surgery or long-standing compensation.
Posture & Desk Strain
Upper-back, neck and jaw tension driven by long hours at a screen.
Four steps, one clear plan
No guesswork and no one-size-fits-all protocol — every plan is built around what your assessment actually shows.
Consultation
History, goals and a review of prior treatment, imaging and injuries.
Assessment
Movement screening and palpation to map the trigger points driving your pain.
Treatment
Precise needling of the identified points, often paired with manual therapy.
Integration
Home movement, functional medicine support and a follow-up cadence.

Questions patients ask us first
Does dry needling hurt?
Most patients feel a small prick followed by a deep ache or brief twitch as the trigger point releases. It's short-lived, and many describe the release that follows as immediate relief. Mild soreness for a day or two afterward is normal.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on how long the issue has been present. Acute problems often resolve in one to three visits; chronic patterns typically need a short series alongside movement work and functional medicine support.
Is it the same as acupuncture?
No. The needles are similar, but dry needling is guided by modern neuroanatomy and targets muscular trigger points, while acupuncture follows Traditional Chinese Medicine meridian theory. Dr. Fields is trained in both.
Can I train or work out afterward?
Light movement and hydration are encouraged. We generally recommend keeping intense training light for 24 hours so the treated tissue can settle.
